2023-05-20 02:05:10 +0000 UTC View PostToday is Saint Dunstan's feast day, let's celebrate! Dunstan is one of several patron saints of locksmiths. He has a fascinating biography. An interesting side note, if you've ever heard about the lucky horseshoe hanging over a doorway, he started that fad over 1000 years ago. The devil and horseshoe storys are folkloric and funny. One story relates how Dunstan nailed a horseshoe to the Devil's foot when he was asked to re-shoe the Devil's cloven hoof. This caused the Devil great pain, and Dunstan only agreed to remove the shoe and release the Devil after he promised never to enter a place where a horseshoe is over the door. Many claim this as the origin of the lucky horseshoe. Believe me, when I say me and this guy have had quite a few heated conversations over the years since I converted to the Church in 2009 St. Dunstan has an awesome story. I recommend googling him and reading some of the biographies and stories written about him. He's an interesting character for sure. I know many of you don't recognize saints or even religion, thats cool. Dunstan was a real person in history that accomplished a lot. He inspired many folk stories too. Man, myth and legend. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunstan
2023-05-19 11:35:03 +0000 UTC View PostI installed a couple DL2700 mortise locks this morning. Both locks I replaced were trashed. One had push plates covering swiss cheese. I was amazed it looked as good as it did when I finished 😆 I used construction cores for function checks as I didn't know how they wanted the x4 cores keyed until I finished the install. The second one I did was a staff restroom 🚻... I tryed to explain that they couldn't lock it from the inside with these particular units and suggested the indicator deadbolt be installed above. They couldn't comprehend what I was saying, but I'm sure they'll figure it out soon enough. I'll probably be back next week installing an indicator bolt 🤷🏻♂️
2023-05-16 23:07:41 +0000 UTC View PostI cut a fuck-ton of Medeco x4 keys today. I usually just use the blue punch but they wanted 75 so I spent an hour at the shop this morning using their machine
2023-05-15 23:55:01 +0000 UTC View PostCheap CalRoyal crap on cheap church doors (bank of 4 doors and one is electrified with a keypad). It has weak aluminum frames. Seems like I'm patching up this junk at least once a year since they had a cheap contractor put it all in a few years ago. They don't want to spend money for quality hardware, but they're fine paying me to keep it going when it becomes a problem for them 🙄
2023-05-08 23:49:16 +0000 UTC View PostI found this beautiful old deadbolt in an old chapel. The Sargent cylinder probably isn't original to the lock but it was an interesting find. Anyone know if the lock is actually a Sargent?

2023-04-22 13:39:05 +0000 UTC View PostQuick photo story... 10th floor of office building in north Dallas. Original factory installed lock made in a foreign land was FUBAR. The guy said he only needs top drawer to lock. I popped in a CompX push lock on the side and it's secure. ... well, as secure as any cabinet lock can be. 20 minutes here netted 200 bones 😉
2023-03-14 11:56:28 +0000 UTC View PostA local law enforcement center had some remodeling done with new doors and offices. The contractor was kind enough to leave the chief with the control keys. I changed them to Medeco X4 Corbin Russwin style LFIC
2023-03-11 21:20:41 +0000 UTC View PostWorn out Medeco pins... Dumped it out, flushed it with parts cleaner, cleaned out the side bar assembly. Repinned it with new pins and she works like new again 👍🏼 The key still looked good, it had some wear on the peaks but the important parts of the cuts were good. The pins were so worn, it would only turn one direction after shaking the key for a few seconds. This cylinder is probably used 40 to 50 times a day. It should be good for another couple years now.
