Nearly got my ass handed to me on this one...
Marks mortise on a Taylor-Tuff security storm door failed in the bolted locked position. Key would only turn 3/4 turn either way.
It wouldn't wrench out. I drilled thru to the set screw and then wrenched cylinder. I then started dissecting guts thru the mortise cylinder hole piece by piece. Finally pulled out a loose piece that had broken, dropped and jammed up the works.
The new lock looks much better, customer loved it. Her porch was finished with river pebbles, sore knees even with the HL Flake kneeling pad.
The old lady said shit was about to get real when she saw me bring up my van chair 😆

Mortise body locks on glass office doors. Looked a lot like the weldable boxes for gates. I didn't see a brand name anywhere on it. I only master keyed these, I didn't remove the lock body to look for maker marks or part numbers. The cylinder was an original Schlage.

Close up look at the micro switch on a Detex 230. Customer complaint was alarm activated and staying on when locking bolt with key. During the initial function check, the customer was 100% correct.
I found it was missing one of the rim cylinder mounting screws and the other was so loose the cylinder was about to fall out. Replaced missing screw and tightened both. Also all the bolt slide and moving parts were dry as a bone and the friction was fouling up smooth operation. The micro switch was dirty as hell too. Flushed it good with Houdini (safe for electronics). New Duracell 9v and 50 function checks. Works great, like new now.

Found this on a job this week. Stacked master/control pins. And what the fuck is that shit in the #4 chamber between the master pins?
I suspect they may have two different control keys for their locations. In 27 years I've come across a couple instances where the end user has 2 different control keys to limit access in a particular area. This was in a national chain food/beverage kiosk. I rekeyed it to new location key, existing district master and known district control key.
Some asshat double capped a couple chambers too 🙄

One of my property managers has a tavern relocate to a different property and different management company. The week after they moved we went out to rekey the locks to their vacancy master so the cleanup crews could make ready and the leasing agents could show the space.
They left over $1000 of new beer, some wine and a few new bottles of liquor. All unopened. The apprentice asked me what do we do... Photo and document it, call the property manager and text the photos. None of that is to be touched unless she says take what you want.

The key was broken in a way were it had flared out and was stuck in the keyway. I couldn't get an extractor of any sort to budge the key. I didn't want to drill the core and/or key up a new core.
I drilled a small hole in the rear end and push the broken key out, decoded it, punched out a new key and screwed the cylinder back in the door. Quick job.

⚠️PSA⚠️
It's not smart to leave keys hanging in your locks. You could rip your clothing, scratch yourself badly and bleed or even worse, break a precious innocent key.
This is a serious Class A violation of the "safe key act" campaign
Please do not leave keys hanging in the locks.
Stop the insanity,
Just don't do it...
Thank you

They pulled the apprentices from the field for a couple days to help relocate one of the shops. I got the text letting me know he was back the next day.
Apparently I have a reputation, a locksmith friend made the Apprentice Show meme 🤣

I road tripped and hour or so south near Waco to service this door. New dogging kit and new bolt catch/release thingy at top of this Jackson 1285
It was fekkin' cold 🥶 Couldn't stop shivering, couldn't feel my fingers and had to whiz 4 times. The cold made it difficult to change the dogging assembly & I was there way too long, but the manager girl took pity on me and fed me for free. The new Italian mozzarella chicken sandwich and garlic butter parmesan fries are gotdam GOOD!
... the manager girl on duty also had a pretty face and smackin' big ass 😉

Half of the doors on this floor where fail secure, the tenant vacated and pulled their system. I had to open a half a dozen of these. The lady said I was amazing, I told her, "shhh... Not so loud. Everyone will want some" 🤫

A short 75 mile road trip, urgent request, they have to slam door to close it.
I found the back door with the sprung hinge and it was not closing. It certainly appears like they've been propping the door open with a mop handle or a broomstick near the top hinge and that's what fekked up their hinge. I put the Hinge Doctor on it and got it fixed and it closes good now. No one here speaks English so I spangished them real good and played a game of charades. I know it will happen again. Documented in the notes and on the invoice so next month when they call back it won't be warranty, and next time it will require new hinges because the Hinge Doctor can only do so much.
